CHILDREN IN WAR TORN SYRIA
We're supporting UNICEF who are on the ground in Syria by funding literacy materials for Syrian children
After 5-years of conflict in Syria, and entire generation of children are growing up knowing only war and deprivation. According to UNICEF, the killing, abduction and arrest of students and teachers has become commonplace, as have arbitrary attacks on schools. About one in four schools cannot be used because they have been damaged, destroyed or are being used as shelters for the internally displaced or military purposes.
More than 2.1 million children inside Syria and 700,000 Syrian children in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt are not in school. This will have a devastating effect on the future of this nation. Even in the midst of extreme turmoil, schooling helps children regain a sense of normalcy. Returning to learning in times of conflict not only helps the children look toward a better future, it also helps children deal with psychological trauma as they rebuild their relationships with friends and teachers.

The Jane Austen Literacy Foundation raises money to fund literacy supplies for temporary schools run by UNICEF. For example, a School In A Box costs US$150.00 and contains materials to teach up to forty children. It is one of UNICEF's most needed resources to educate the children of Syria.
